All Eyes on the Mediterranean
TOM (Tutti gli Occhi sul Mediterraneo, All eyes on Mediterraneo in Italian) is a project by ARCI, Sailingfor Blue LAB and Sheep Italia, developed in collaboration with the Laboratorio di Salute Popolare for its medical activities.
The project was created to uphold international law and defend the human rights of people crossing the Central Mediterranean, at a time when Europe has turned away from its obligations of rescue and asylum.
What we do
We sail, monitor and document.
When needed, we intervene.
Our boats collect data and firsthand testimonies on human rights violations committed by European governments and by the countries to which they have outsourced border control — Libya and Tunisia — in exchange for funding tied to practices that international rulings and reports have described as criminal.
When we identify boats in distress, we stabilize the situation while waiting for the responsible authorities to intervene. If they do not arrive, we step in.
Why we do it
After the experience of Mediterranea Saving Humans, ARCI returns to the sea together with Sailingfor Blue LAB and Sheep Italia to support the civilian fleet that has been operating in the Mediterranean for years despite criminalization and constant obstruction.
A civilian presence for monitoring, rescue and testimony, standing against indifference and border policies built on exclusion.
